What is the process of becoming an adoptive parent?

1. You contact the Society by phone, letter, e-mail, or in person. Click here for contact details
2. An adoption worker will speak to you on the day, or soon after and answer your initial queries. We will forward you additional information on adoption.
3. An adoption worker will with your consent, arrange to visit you within two working weeks of your
initial enquiry to discuss relevant issues. There is a legal obligation upon all adoption agencies to
undertake police checks, medical checks and local authority checks on all adopters. To avoid delay and
with your consent we will initiate some of these checks at this early stage.

4. Following this visit, we will invite you to attend a pre-adoptive training course.
At present these courses run on an 8 - 10 week cycle.
5. On completion of the training course and should you wish to continue, we would request that you make
a formal application to adopt.
6. Within two weeks of receiving your formal application, an adoption worker will contact you to begin
work on the adoption home study report. The adoption report normally consists of approximately 6 visits.
These take place in your home. While being a detailed report, this is a fairly standard and straightforward
process. Many families report finding the experience of great value stating that it helped clarify their
thoughts about the types of children they later adopted.
7. Upon completion you will receive a copy of the report to co-sign and invited to attend the adoption panel.
The adoption panel passes a recommendation to approve, defer or decline. - It is unusual for an application to be
declined at the adoption panel.
8. The process of first contact to approval normally takes approximately 7 - 8 months.
9. Once your application is approved we will work with you to identify a child or sibling group of children
that you feel comfortable in parenting.
